There are several factors
to examine when sizing a student to a cello. Ask yourself these questions:
Does the upper rim of the cello body rest on the sternum?
Does the left knee contact the curve below the lower bout corner?
Is the C peg should near the left ear? (see next page for info on setting endpin length)
Is the left hand able to reach both ends of the fingerboard with ease?
Can the left hand comfortably reach the notes in first position?
General age guidelines:
1/8 size - 4 to 6 years old
1/4 size - 5 to 7 years old
1/2 size - 7 to 11 years old
3/4 size - 11 to 14 years old
4/4 size - 14 and above (high school)
General height guidelines:
1/8 to 1/4 size - below 4 feet
1/2 size - 4 to 4 1/2 feet
3/4 size - 4 1/2 to 5 feet
4/4 size - 5 feet and above
