Position PlayingOne of the ways to reduce anxiety about shifting is to introduce the higher positions without shifting before you introduce the idea of shifting to and from first position. For violin, viola and cello, the simple tune, Au Claire de la Lune works very well for playing in different positions without the need to shift (cellists need to use extension). For violin and viola, it is easy to play many rote songs like Twinkle, Mary had a Little Lamb, Lightly row, etc in higher positions without shifting. It is more challenging to find songs that stay in position for cello and bass. By using the open strings, bassists can remain in the neckblock position and play several songs. Here is Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in neckblock (Simandl 4th) position:
