Preliminary exercises for
violin and viola to develop the shape of the left hand
Exercise No. 2
Strum, then tap strings with
ring and little fingers in the low (first) position. Shift the hand
up the fingerboard. Place the thumb in the saddle of the neckblock,
then tap strings with ring and little fingers in the high
(4th) position.
The purpose of this exercise
is to develop a correct hand position, and also to get the student
comfortable with shifting
from the very beginning. Using this type of approach will make shifting
and
vibrato
much easier for the student to learn.
