High Positions for Cello and BassIn more advanced thumb position playing, the thumb will need to press the string to the fingerboard. This can be quite painful at first. A callous will eventually form. To accelerate this process, have students practice playing scales using just their thumb. High positions may also require the reading of music written in tenor and/or treble clef. When playing in high positions, the bow must be placed very close to the bridge for the instrument to produce a good tone.
