Holding
the Bow at the Balance Point
The balance point is the place on the stick of the bow where the bow
balances perfectly. It is easier to form the bow hold here than at the
frog, especially for younger students. Since the bow is balanced here,
holding the bow is effortless. This helps avoid stiff fingers early on.
Some teachers have their students
make the first bow strokes while holding the bow at the balance point.
While holding the bow at the balance point, play in the upper half
of bow,
from middle
to
tip.
Try
rowing the bow for student to learn which
angle
the
best sound comes from. Adjust the bow so it can be bowed straight. Adjust
parts of arm. Adjust the shoulder first, then the elbow, and then the
wrist. When the student has developed sufficent strength, move their bow
hold from the balance point to the frog.
